TAMPA - It will be a grand old party in Tampa when August of 2012 rolls around.

The Republican Party today selected Tampa to host its next presidential nominating convention, an event that will attract as many as 40,000 visitors and potentially provide an economic boost in excess of $100 million.

The convention is scheduled to take place the week of August 27, 2012.

Dignitaries, including Mayor Pam Iorio and developer Al Austin, who has led the effort, received the news by telephone. They gathered in the 21st-floor offices of Tampa Bay & Company, which markets the area to tourists and conventioneers.

Cheers let out as an ordinary office speakerphone reverberated the extraordinary news.

"We are very, very proud for the selection and we're really looking forward to being with you," RNC Chairman Michael Steele told the room. "We're excited and ready to get to work on what we know will be one of the best conventions we've ever had."

The wait was anxious, after all Tampa was unsuccessful in two previous attempts to land both the 2004 and 2008 conventions.

Members of the GOP's Site Selection Committee picked Tampa over Salt Lake City and Phoenix. The vote took place in suburban Washington, D.C.

Florida has not hosted a national political convention since 1972. In that year, both the Republican and Democratic conventions were held in Miami.

The St. Pete Times Forum is likely to be the main venue for the convention, though much planning will be needed before a schedule is developed. Other venues, including the Tampa Convention Center, are likely to house a portion of the convention and/or the throng of national and international news media that will inevitably converge on the area.

More than $100 million is necessary to host the convention. Roughly $40 million is expected in private donations to the host committee. The remainder is allocated from federal funds, including a $50 million grant for security and at least $16.8 million for planning.

Tourism officials were encouraged by the possibilities of the convention. Minneapolis estimated a $168 million boost in 2008; New York estimated more than $200 million in 2004.

Showcasing is also part of the equation.

Minneapolis estimated the convention in 2008 led to 10 billion "impressions" in the broadcast, print, and online media. That is equivalent of 150 Super Bowl ads, Minnesota organizers said.

Florida will relish that kind of exposure.

Flashing across two screens in the conference room Wednesday afternoon were a red GOP logo -- the star-clad elephant -- surrounded by the words "Tampa-St. Petersburg." Below it read "Republican National Convention 2012."

Another slide said "Catch the Wave." TB&C staffers sported campaign-style button with the phrase.

While camera crews assembled and the visitors bureau prepared for the announcement, TB&C executive vice president Steve Hayes wiped down the wooden conference table with wax. He joked that the expected crowd was growing by the hour.

"You know it could be 'no,'" he said he told the callers.

He has happy to be wrong.

“AMAZING”

This was one amazing convention. I have attended six conventions and this one was amazing. Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin just energized the GOP and made me so excited to go home and work hard for the next 60 days.
Standing in 1000’s of balloons and confetti was unbelievable and being part of history was just amazing. Senator John McCain spoke from the heart and show what a great job he will do as president and make American great again.

He has called on Americas to join a cause great than themselves. John McCain will fight for you and keep taxes low.

Well its time to go home and begin campaigning for American’s Future. We can’t wait to welcome Senator McCain and Governor Sarah to Scranton and Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Sarah, Sarah, Sarah was the chant of the night. Wow!

It was as a great experience to be part of history last night. Sarah introduces herself to the America public. She hit a home run. What a breath of fresh air. There was so much energy in the room you could feel it all the way back in Northeastern, Pennsylvania.

Well! Scranton made history again. She was speaking to our values and spirit of our people in Northeastern Pennsylvania. What a great image of a mother and her family on the stage for the world to see. Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin will surly win the hearts of Northeastern, Pennsylvania.

She made a direct appeal to our small towns from Scranton, Dunmore, Wilkes-Barre, White Haven, Honesdale, Tunkhannock, Towanda and beyon.

Well getting ready for tonight. Senator John McCain will lay out his goals and plans to make America better and energy efficiency. You think last night was great! Watch tonight.

Well we are finally getting down to business.

First the people of Minneapolis-St. Paul are just as friendly as the people of Northeastern, PA. So far we are treated so kindly.

The day started out with a preview of “American Carol” a satire look at Michael Moore and liberal left. The movie opens on Oct 3, 2008.

Former Senator Rick Santorum spoke to the delegation and is now overwhelming supporting McCain-Palin ticket. He said that Governor Palin is a true conservative and a reformer. The Governor is a great choice to be the next vice president. She is a maverick just like Senator John McCain.

Here we go again the liberal are using the politics of personal destruction. They just don’t know how to react. Remember history-liberals do not win presidential elections.

Tuesday night was the beginning to show the public how Senator McCain is putting county first. The highlight of night was hearing from great speakers and paying tribute to some great presidents. Former Senate Fred Thompson address the convention and gave a great speech showing Senator McCain character and strengths to be president.

The wow speech of the night was from Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, a former democrat now an independent. He came out in full support of the McCain-Palin ticket and ask all American to make their choice for president base on the person not the party. He ask the democrats to think and make the right choice Senator McCain for President.

Did you see those yellow towel waving on the convention floor? Well that was the Pennsylvania delegation.

Wednesday is going to be a big night: It will the first time the American public will see and get to know Governor Sarah Palin.

“Putting Country First” has had positive effect on the Convention’s First Night.

The Delegates were addressed by First Lady, Laura Bush and Cindy McCain and ask us and the county to support the cause of hurricane relief. http://www.causegreater.com/.

The delegation got started on Monday, morning with a group breakfast. They hear from some special and important guests. Making a special appearance was John McCain young mother of 96. She was warmly received. Also making appearance was the former Governor of New York George Pataki and American Hero that was John McCain roommate in the prison camp.

Last night was great. The host committee treated the delegation from all 50 states at Civic Fest. located at the Minneapolis Convention Center. It was a great opportunity to meet delegates from all over the United States at the Fest. You could fine almost everything with a GOP or elephant logo on it from hats to candy mints.

Highlites of the day were meeting the people of FOX NEWS NETWORK and attending a lunchon at the Circus Juventas. Circus Jeventas is a performing arts young circus school located in St.Paul, Minnesota. They offer youth circus arts training and performance opportunities for children and youth ages 3 to 21 in a safe and noncompetitive environment.

At 9:30 a.m. Saturday the delegation has arrived at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport with a convention greeting from the host city. They greet us with a warm Minnesota welcome and smile.

Paul, Delores and Rose wore the famous “Obama Busters” T-Shirt a creation of Paul DeFabo. The shirts got a lot of interest from many folks at the airport. People were asking where did you get the shirts. What a creative idea.

On July 21, the convention got the keys to the Xcel Energy Center and began the six week build-out of the arena, preparing it to welcome our 45,000 convention guests. Soon after, we announced the official block schedule for the week’s events. Outfitting the "X" with the equipment needed to accommodate all of the convention participants and the packed schedule we have laid out is a massive undertaking. By the time the proceedings begin, the convention complex will house 475,000 square feet of media space; more than 25 miles of analog, digital, fiber, and phone cable; and 135 miles of copper wiring. WILKES-BARRE Arizona Sen. John McCain focused heavily on the high price of gasoline Wednesday in his first visit to Northeastern Pennsylvania as a presidential candidate, saying ending the national dependence on foreign oil would also help make it safer from terrorists.

This is an economic issue; it's an environmental issue, and it's a national security issue, Mr. McCain said at a town-hall meeting at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts. We are sending some $700 billion of American money to pay for this gasoline to countries that don't like us very much. And some of that money ends up in the hands of terrorist organizations. That's just a fact. ... We cannot continue it.

About 800 people showed up for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee at first appearance in a region whose plethora of conservative Democrats could be key to his chances of winning Pennsylvania.

With its balcony empty, the Kirby was less than half-filled, and dozens of seats remained empty on the first floor.

Mr. McCain didn't shy away from touting proposals sure to draw fire: nuclear energy and clean-coal technology.

While he favors wind and solar power as alternative energy sources, Mr. McCain said building 45 new nuclear power plants could create 700,000 new jobs. He promised to invest $2 billion a year in clean-coal technology ” the conversion of coal into diesel gasoline or other fuels ” because the nation has the largest untapped coal reserve in the world. A clean-coal plant is proposed in Schuylkill County.

Environmentalists criticize both technologies as potentially harmful, but Mr. McCain said the nations military has been powering its submarines with nuclear fuel for 60 years without an accident.

Eighty percent of French electricity is generated by nuclear power. We always want to imitate the French, he joked, alluding to some Americans distaste for France opposition to the war in Iraq.

Mr. McCain said he also favors federal investment in automobiles that can use different types of fuel, a $5,000 tax credit for people who buy hydrogen-powered cars. He also advocates offshore drilling for oil.

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, opposes offshore drilling and large-scale expansion of nuclear energy.

Mr. McCain restated his support for a six-month suspension of the 18-cents-a-gallon federal gasoline tax, saying it would give low-income residents, struggling truckers and others need a little break as the nation works on solving its energy crisis.

I don't have to tell anybody here that every time you go to the gas station, you are shocked the cost of a gallon of oil, he said.

One audience member, Frank Jescavage, a self-described lifelong Democrat, said the gas-tax suspension would produce little savings for drivers, but Mr. McCain didn't waver. He said criticism of it centered on making sure money was available for congressional pork-barrel transportation projects.

Critics, including Mr. Obama, argue it would eliminate money for repairs and construction of highways and other essential transportation projects.

Problems with pork

Mr. McCain unflinchingly criticized â€œpork-barrel projects, a derisive term for special earmarks of tax dollars by congressmen for projects in their districts.

The region is flush with examples of projects funded by congressional earmarks, including Steamtown National Historic Site and the Interstate 81 Davis Street interchange in Scranton.

Mr. McCain, who said he has never sought an earmark in 26 years in Congress, believes they breed corruption as congressmen trade political contributions for the insertion of earmarks into spending bills. The failure to curb them has contributed to unrestrained federal spending that has â mortgaged our children's future by pushing up the federal debt. He favors giving presidents veto power over specific budget requests.

I will veto every pork-barrel spending bill that comes across my desk, he vowed.

In an interview afterward, Mr. McCain said he favors a competitive process for determining funding of pet projects so only the most worthy receive funding.

Iraq strategy

His sharpest criticism of Mr. Obama centered on the war in Iraq.

Without naming President Bush, he said the early war effort suffered from a every flawed strategy and his opposition to it brought charges of disloyalty from Republicans.

But a 30,000-troop surge, which he supported and Mr. Obama opposed, and Gen. David Petraeus tactic of setting up outposts in Iraqi neighborhoods to battle insurgents reduced violence, he said.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Supporters of John McCain here acknowledge that Democrat Barack Obama wins attention with his speaking style and charisma, but they say those qualities can't match the Republican candidate's stellar background. Some of those attending McCain's town-hall-style meeting Wednesday said the Arizona senator's biggest asset is his own life -- a military family, a quarter-century in Congress and the five-and-a-half years spent as an oft-tortured prisoner of war in Vietnam. "Anyone who can withstand what he did in Vietnam can certainly take the pressure of the presidency," said Joan Hendon, 67, a businesswoman from Lake Ariel, Pa. And Obama? "Fluff."

As Obama continued his travels through the Middle East and Europe, McCain touted his plans for new energy sources, including more domestic oil drilling and nuclear power plants, as well as solar and wind power and battery-operated cars. He campaigned before a mostly Republican crowd in this northeastern Pennsylvania city in an area that often votes Democratic. But polls show McCain closely trailing Obama in Pennsylvania, and McCain's personal history can help sway voters here, said Thomas Baldino, a political science professor at nearby Wilkes University. Nancy Cooney, 62, a housewife from Wilkes-Barre, showed her copy of Faith of My Fathers, McCain's memoirs of his years in captivity as well as how his father and grandfather rose to become admirals. "I like his record," she said. . . . Some of the younger people said that while many of their co-horts are excited about Obama, McCain can also appeal to younger voters. "He has a lot of charisma as a leader," said Kendra Sirak, 19, a Dallas, Pa., resident who is a pre-med student at Northwestern University. Obama got harsh reviews from some in the crowd. Laureen Cummings, 44, who owns a nursing agency, labeled the Democratic candidate "a socialist" who is already acting as if he is the president in his meetings with foreign leaders. It's smart for McCain to campaign here, Baldino said. Hillary Rodham Clinton trounced Obama here in April, carrying more than 70% of the Democratic vote in both Lackawanna County (Scranton) and Luzerne County (Wilkes-Barre).

Dear Friend of the Convention, Hello again from headquarters, where we are 47 days from gaveling to order the 2008 Republican National Convention! The convention is nearing full-staffing as we prepare to welcome 45,000 guests who will join together at the Xcel Energy Center for the most exciting and energetic convention in Party history and nominate Sen. John McCain as our party's candidate for President of the United States. Since our last newsletter, the convention has received praise from the media for our planning efforts, how we are organizing the most tech-savvy convention in Republican history, and our commitment to serve a cause greater than one's self interest through our American Neighbor Volunteer Program. Twice in the last month, Minneapolis-Saint Paul welcomed Sen. McCain. The first, for one of his famous town-hall meetings only steps from the Xcel Energy Center. The most recent came last week as Sen. and Mrs. McCain paid a surprise visit to his Saint Paul headquarters. Also this month, we were proud to have had our efforts to reach out to women highlighted over the Internet. Several of our staff, including yours truly, were recently featured in a Web video for the Lifetime television network. We announced the winner of our American Neighbor YouTube video contest which called on Americans to share with us their story of American Neighbors making a difference in their communities. We also announced a second YouTube contest, giving Americans another opportunity to join us at the convention. We look forward to welcoming the winners here in September. In July, the Republican Party also celebrated its 154th birthday. From our humble beginnings in Wisconsin and Michigan, our party has blazed a path of leadership and change that we continue to this day. Lifetime Highlights Convention Women Earlier this year, the convention agreed to work with the Lifetime television network on its "Every Woman Counts" online program to engage women in the political process as voters and future candidates. As part of our participation, the Lifetime cameras came to our Minneapolis-Saint Paul offices to interview several of the women working at the 2008 Republican National Convention, including our senior leadership: Convention Chairman Jo Ann Davidson, President and CEO Maria Cino and Vice President Mel Raines. Construction Begins on Minnesota Veteran's Home Convention staff, led by President and CEO Maria Cino, joined local volunteers as part of a three-day "build brigade" at the site where Homes for Our Troops is building a new home for Minnesota National Guard SGT Marcus Kuboy, who was wounded in Iraq. "Sen. John McCain has called on all Americans to serve a cause greater than one's self-interest, and we are proud to honor SGT Kuboy and the many sacrifices he has made for our country with this new, specially adapted home," Cino said. Convention Countdown: 5-3 Good Guys The Saint Paul Pioneer Press recently compared preparations for the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in eight categories and determined that Republican convention organizers hold "the upper hand." According to the newspaper, Republican National Convention planners in Saint Paul hold advantages in fundraising, media relations, and civic engagement, among others. The score: The GOP leads 5-3. The money quote: "Convention officials [in Denver] rescheduled a spring media 'walk through,' where media organizations have a chance to set up their operations. The move was widely seen as a sign of disarray and forced airline reservations to be canceled or switched. Advantage: St. Paul. American Neighbor Video Winner Announced Many across the nation took to heart the call of Sen. John McCain to "serve a cause greater than one's own self-interest," and shared with us their video stories of American Neighbors making a difference in their communities for the chance to attend the 2008 Republican National Convention. Out of all the submissions, five finalists emerged. The finalists were voted on by users of the convention's YouTube channel. Thanks to the YouTube voters, we now have a winner. Congratulations to John Merguerian from Van Nuys, Calif. whose video of Jason Gilde was chosen the best example of being a good American Neighbor. Both John and Jason will be invited to attend the 2008 Republican National Convention, and John's video will be shown during the convention's official proceedings. Another Chance to Come to the Convention The 2008 Republican National Convention has again joined with our partners at YouTube to offer another chance for Americans to come to Minneapolis-Saint Paul and join us at the Xcel Energy Center. All you need to do is put together a video on "Why are you a Republican in 2008?" The creator of the winning video will come to the convention and have their video shown during an official session. High-Wired Act From the start, the organizers of the 2008 Republican National Convention have promised to make it the most "tech-savvy" in party history - and now the wired world is noticing. First-up: a June 29 story in the Minneapolis Star Tribune detailing the technical demands of hosting a crowd of 45,000 guests for four days in September - comparing the effort to that of a Super Bowl. Convention Chief Information Officer Max Everett spoke to the Star Tribune about our plans for streaming video: "While much of the video will be commercial TV broadcasts -- including unedited footage that will take up substantial bandwidth -- the convention itself will be adding to the load by providing streaming video from the convention floor through its Web page, www.GOPConvention2008.com. The convention's video crew will focus on conveying a "you-are-there" feeling via gavel-to-gavel coverage and backstage conversations with convention speakers, Everett said. Big-screen monitors in the convention complex also will be able to display the streaming video." ShadowTV Named Official Provider To help us monitor what is expected to be a massive amount of media coverage of the 2008 Republican National Convention, ShadowTV has been named the convention's Official Broadcast Monitoring Provider. ShadowTV will provide the convention with digital, continuous access to live and archived television coverage of the convention. If any of the 250 local television stations ShadowTV monitors has a story about the GOP Convention, we will be notified about it in real-time and be able to spread the word just as fast. "The digital technology will go a long way toward our promise of a greener convention as we avoid the necessity of using non-recyclable video tapes," convention President & CEO Maria Cino said. Host Committee Update Our friends at the Minneapolis Saint Paul 2008 Host Committee continue their preparations to welcome visitors and delegates, while promoting the convention and its host cities:
As of Mid-July, the Host Committee had met its goal of 10,000 local volunteers to assist during the convention. Now that it has reached its goal, the Host Committee will continue to sign-up local volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, go to www.MSP2008.com.
Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak declared the last week of June "Convention Volunteer Sign-Up Week" in both cities to encourage Minneapolis-Saint Paul residents to participate in the "once-in-a-lifetime" experience.
Also, as part of the local push for volunteers, the Host Committee secured the services of Minnesota Viking All-Pro Center (and Saint Paul-native) Matt Birk to highlight a PSA campaign encouraging local turnout. Click here to view the video.

A: I have to say it was my 11th grade civics teacher Mrs. Kohl. She taught that class in a manner that challenged us and always made you feel comfortable in expressing your views. She nominated me for Boys' State, where I was blown away and I found what I loved to do. Q: What is your favorite thing about working for the 2008 Republican National Convention? A: The camaraderie of the staff is awesome. I worked on the convention in 2004 in NYC and that is what brought me back this time. I have to say we might even have a closer-knit staff. Q: What is your most memorable moment in Republican politics? A: The 2004 Inauguration. All our hard work finally paid off and we really enjoyed the fruits of our labor. Q: Where did you move here from? A: I moved from Washington D.C. Q: What do you like about your Blackberry? A: Being able to Google anything at a drop of a hat. It is great when you want to prove yourself correct in an argument. Q: What do most people not know about you? A: I was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and my first language is Spanish. People really look surprised when I speak with my southern drawl and then switch to Spanish. It usually gets a rise out of them. Q: If you had to choose: Minnesota Twins baseball game or concert by Minnesota native Prince? A: Twins baseball all the way. I am a big fan of Joe Mauer. I am a huge college football fan and follow high school recruiting religiously and I remember when he was the #1 quarterback in the country out of Cretin-Derham High School here in Saint Paul. Gaetano wins Delegate position

Dunmore, PA---Rose Ann Gaetano, Dunmore, PA was recently elected delegate and alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention in the April 22 primary election. She will be representing the Republican Party from the 11th Congressional District. She was the top voter getter out several candidates seeking the position of both delegate and alternate delegate.

Gaetano is looking forward to making the trip to Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota to represent and support the Republican Nominate for President. “This is going to be a great experience being a delegate and taking an active role in the Republican Convention” stated Gaetano. This is very important election for our country and the GOP must nominate a candidate who will reach out to democrats and independents.

2008 Republican National Convention Expands Outreach to Hispanics

New Web section, staff additions highlight commitment to engaging as many people as possible

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The 2008 Republican National Convention today announced the launch of the Spanish language section of its official convention Web site. The Spanish section, www.gopconvention2008.com/enespanol, will feature Spanish versions of convention information, fact sheets and press releases. The section will feature regular updates in Spanish leading up to and during the 2008 Republican National Convention. "The launch of the Spanish-language section of our Web site is another important step toward creating a fully interactive online community to engage millions around the country," said convention President & CEO Maria Cino. "It is our goal to carry the Republican Party's message to all communities, so they may experience Sen. John McCain's extraordinary leadership and his positive vision for America." As part of its outreach to Hispanics, the convention also announced today two new hires who will engage media leading up to and during the four-day event. Joanna Burgos will serve as Press Secretary and will lead the convention's press operation for national media. Burgos previously served in various communications positions at the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Homeland Security. She is a fluent Spanish speaker and native of Miami. Yohana de la Torre will serve as Deputy Press Secretary for Specialty Media and will oversee outreach to several constituencies, including Spanish-language media. Also a fluent Spanish speaker and native of Miami, de la Torre is currently owner and managing editor of the Gulf Coast Times in Fort Myers, Fla. She previously served as a communications specialist for Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL) and at the Republican National Committee. For the first time ever, and in conjunction with its Official Live Video Streaming Provider Ustream.TV, the convention will stream live gavel-to-gavel coverage in Spanish on its Web site: www.GOPConvention2008.com.
